"Sarbez! Comedy Night" Showcases Local Talent

On Wednesday, February 22nd Lauren Bressette hosted the “Sarbez! Comedy Night” at Planet Sarbez in St. Augustine.

The “Sarbez! Comedy Night” showcased local comedians. Four comedians were advertised as the evening’s talent: Shayne Druback, Alex Gasparini, Marc Stone, and Richard Lepre. After the four headliners completed their sets there was an open mic session, which gave patrons a chance to get on stage and perform their own stand-up routines.

Bressette not only hosted the evening, but she also organized the event and chose Planet Sarbez as the venue.

“I was looking for a younger and more eclectic crowd and I figured that I could find that here [Planet Sarbez] and I most certainly did,” Bressette said.

Planet Sarbez is a popular St. Augustine hangout spot. The bar/restaurant/music venue is especially popular among Flagler College students. Planet Sarbez owner, Ryan Kunsch, is a Flagler alumnus himself. Kunsch study fine arts at Flagler. His artistic passion is evident in the art and murals that decorate Planet Sarbez. The walls of the bar are covered in vibrant colors, which gives Planet Sarbez a unique aesthetic.

Since its opening in 2013 Planet Sarbez has hosted many live musical performances, a few beer pong tournaments, and a comedy show or two.

“One night like three years ago I saw a comedy night at Sarbez, but it was like comedians that were from a different place and I hadn’t really seen it again,” Bressette said.

Though Lauren Bressette was the host of the event, she is also a stand-up comedian herself. Bressette ended the evening with a bit of her own stand-up, after being persuaded by an eager audience.

Planet Sarbez, with its menu of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and cheap beer, has an atmosphere and a clientele that paired well with the comedic stylings of the “Sarbez! Comedy Night” performers. According to Bressette, the “Sarbez! Comedy Night” will not be the last comedy show at Planet Sarbez.

“I think it’s [“Sarbez! Comedy Night] gonna happen again, because I scheduled another show,” Bressette said.
