St. Augustine Comedian Walker Jesse Discusses Charlie Murphy and Adam Sandler

It has been a week full of highs and lows for comedy fans in St. Augustine. Charlie Murphy, actor and comedian, passed away on April 12th due to leukemia. Three days later on April 15th, Adam Sandler came to St. Augustine to perform standup comedy at the St. Augustine Amphitheater.

You might remember Charlie Murphy from his sketches on Comedy Central’s hit sketch comedy show, Chappelle’s Show. His Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories - Prince sketch has over 300 thousand views on Vimeo. Murphy’s popularity continued to grow after the Chappelle Show. He went on to perform at sold-out venues across the globe. Murphy was a comedian, an actor, and a writer.

Walker Jesse, a St. Augustine-based standup comedian, shared his thoughts on Charlie Murphy.

“Charlie Murphy was already good at writing jokes and he was good at acting and he was a good stand-up comedian, but the most defining features to me he had just the perfect kind of gruff raspy voice and he just knew how to space his words out and deliver things and let things sit and not say too much,” Jesse said.

Adam Sandler brought his “Here Comes the Funny Tour” to St. Augustine, but he didn’t come alone. Comedians David Spade, Nick Swardson, and Rob Schneider all came along with Sandler to entertain at the St. Augustine Amphitheater.

“Adam Sandler, David Spade, whoever the fuck else was smart enough to hitch their wagon to the Sandler Express, yeah I can see why they’re at the Amphitheater. It’s just yeah like ‘I’ll be hanging out with my friends also we’re gonna make a shit load of money,” Jesse said about Sandler and friends’ tour.

The Amphitheater seats over 4000, which isn’t large compared to Orlando’s Amway Center which seats over 20,000, but is just right for the smaller eclectic St. Augustine community.

“Whenever I think of Charlie Murphy I guess I just think of him telling stories and he was just so goddamn good at that. He just had the perfect temperament and he had the perfect sort of voice for it,” Jesse recalled.
