St. Augustine is Swarming With New Pokémon after Pokémon Go Update

Niantic launched the latest update to their popular mobile gaming app, Pokémon Go. On Thursday, February 16th, 2017 80 new Pokémon were released into the world. Pokémon Go was released on July 6th, 2016 and since its release Pokémon fans have been able to use their phone to find, capture, and battle with Pokémon all around them. From common Rattata in suburban neighborhoods to rare Lapras off the coast, Pokémon are now virtually everywhere.

Initially, only 145 of the 802 known Pokémon were available in Pokémon Go. The first batch released are all native to the Kanto region, which fans might remember from the original Red and Blue games released on the Gameboy in 1998 (1996 in Japan). This second batch of 80 Pokémon have arrived from the Johto region, the location of Pokémon Gold and Silver (1999).

In Pokémon Go, Pokémon can be found almost anywhere, however, it has been reported that spawn rates are not as high in less remote areas as they are in more populated metropolitan cities. Those living in or visiting the historic district of St. Augustine, FL are in a prime location for catching a wide of variety of Pokémon. St. Augustine has a population of over 13 thousand. The city also hosts 6 million visitors annually. The high volume of people in the city leads to high numbers of cellular activity, which the Pokémon Go servers use to determine spawn rates. The more cellular activity in an area, the more Pokémon there are.

Trainers will also have a lot to see while catching Pokémon in St. Augustine. The Castillo de San Marco is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and it’s also a Pokéspot. Pokéspots are linked to real places and give trainers items such as Pokéballs, berries, and Pokémon eggs. The Castillo de San Marco isn’t the only location in town that offers an incentive for tourists and Pokémon trainers alike. There are Pokéspots and Pokémon Gyms all over the historic district of St. Augustine. Following the Pokéspots would lead one on a tour of the city, taking them from the Castillo to the Ponce de Leon Hotel and other historic locations.

From Water-type Pokémon at the beach to Electric-types roaming St. George Street, the geographical diversity of the city correlates to a wide variety of virtual Pokémon to find. With 80 new Pokémon to catch, St. Augustine is a great place to start collecting.
